The 2009 Outeniqua Country Hop Route Strawberry Festival held at RedBerry Farm on Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th of September was a great success ! The weather always plays a vital role at Events such as this and despite George being desperate for rain, we were very grateful that it only started raining late Saturday afternoon just as the stallholders were packing up!

There was plenty of entertainment for the children from a 'Dancing Skeleton' to pony rides (with thanks to Wendy and the development riders from BURNSIDE EQUESTRIAN SERVICES), tractor rides, the jumping castles, face painting and many more activities that stallholders offered such as beach golf, fun tatooes and mosaicing.

On both the Friday night and Saturday afternoon, the Festival crowds were treated to an awesome horseback stunt performance by the Cossack Stunt Academy. There was a variety of food stalls to choose from including SPUR burgers, steak rolls, Indian and German cuisine, pancakes, Roosters chicken and more. Local artist Tony Noble attracted a lot of interest with his incredible painting talent.

Some great entries were received for our "2010 Soccer World Cup" themed Scarecrow competition and these were judged on Saturday.

RUN WALK FOR LIFE hosted a 5km fun run/walk through the strawberry fields on Saturday morning. The lucky name drawn from the entries was Campbell White who wins a RUN WALK FOR LIFE T-shirt valued at R130.

A lovely range of stalls exhibited at the Festival selling fresh vegetables, cheese, butter, olives, plants and herbs for the garden, wine and port, soap, candles, clothing and more.

Adults relaxed in the SAB Beer Garden listening to the laid back tunes from local band "Beetles & Butterflys".

The winner of the Scarecrow Competition was Thomas Watson from GLENWOOD HOUSE in George. He wins the RedBerry Farm floating trophy and R5 000 for his school. Well done Thomas !
A BIG THANKYOU to all our sponsors, the local community of George and those visitors from out of town without which the day would not have been such a huge success.

The annual Festival is a fund-raiser for the Outeniqua Country Hop tourist route which forms a large part of activities and accommodation available in George (details on the home page of this site). The proceeds from the Festival (after expenses and donations) go back into the marketing of the route encouraging more people to visit George and surrounds thus providing Employment opportunities for the local Community.
An amount of R2 000 from the proceeds will be donated to 3 local charities as follows: * The PHAMBILI SHELTER for battered woman and children - R1 000 * The 2010 OUTENIQUA WHEELCHAIR CHALLENGE - R500 * The GARDEN ROUTE SPCA - R500
Plans are well under way for the 2010 Outeniqua Country Hop Route STRAWBERRY Festival so watch this space !
