The vineyards and cellar of Herold wines lies just beyond the top of the historic Montagu Pass which winds its way up the Outeniqua mountains above George.
Wine is made and bottled on the farm and besides grapes, blueberries and hazelnuts are also cultivated and there is a young beef herd.
A walk through the vineyards to observe the men practising their vine management skills is fascinating followed by a cellar tour including wine tasting.
Learn how Herold Wines are made then enjoy a light lunch or tea in the cellar lovingly prepared by Ingrid.
Other activities available on the farm include swimming or paddling on the dam or river pool, bird watching or cycling on the farm roads.
One can also find a special picnic spot alongside the mountain streams and there are many nature walks and hiking trails as well as the mini labyrinth above the underground bottle cellar.
For a great weekend getaway, Flufftail Cottage is ideal. It is equipped with the essentials and there is no TV, radio or telephone so peace and quiet in the countryside awaits you.
It offers a self-catering, two-bedroomed cottage and sleeps 4 to 5 people. Costs per night : R350 for two plus R50 for each additional person
An hours drive from George, this is a perfect base from which to explore all the Garden Route and Klein Karoo have to offer.
The farm is open to the public for tastings and cellar tours from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday. For further information and bookings, contact Vivien Harpur 072 833 8223
